Propane for your Home

Discover all the ways propane delivers more efficiency and home comfort.

Energy-efficient propane has become the “fuel of choice” for savvy homeowners and renters, providing a cleaner alternative to other, more traditional heat sources. We offer local, reliable propane delivery, sales and equipment installations in select areas in Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Using your propane furnace as a back-up to an electric heat pump will reduce your energy costs. Heat pumps lose efficiency when the temperature falls below 4°C. A dual fuel system can increase the cost-effectiveness of heat pump technology while simultaneously improving indoor quality.
Ultramar only leases propane tanks. Each Ultramar tank is delivered and installed by a qualified, licensed, 3rd party HVAC technician.
Maximize the space in any room with a propane space heater. For those hard-to-heat places, a propane space heater occupies little space and can even be wall-mounted.
Ambiance meets heat efficiency. Add elegance to any room with an easy-to-use, heat efficient propane fireplace.
Residential water heating is typically the third largest energy use in the home. Some propane water heaters offer ‘on-demand’ hot water, eliminating stand-by heat loss, which can add up to significant net savings.

Discover why culinary experts prefer to cook with a propane stove. A gas range cooks food more evenly and produces instantaneous heat.
No separate propane tank required. You can hook your gas grill directly to your home’s propane source for ultimate convenience.
When the power goes out, so does your comfort and heat. Propane delivers stand-by energy when you need it most.

Why Switch to Propane?

Energy-efficient propane has become the “fuel of choice” for savvy homeowners and renters. Compared to oil and electric energy sources, propane offers you:

1. A cleaner, safer alternative

Propane is a safe, clean and non-toxic fuel alternative listed in the Clean Air Act and Energy Policy Act. With tight controls placed on pumps to eliminate any risk of overfill, propane is safer to store and transfer than any other fossil fuel. Propane appliances emit lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions than electric water heaters.

2. More everyday uses

Propane is perhaps best known as a fuel of choice for BBQ tanks, but it’s far more versatile than that! Did you know that propane can also power your home’s heat pump, furnace/boiler, water heater, space heaters, fireplace, gas range, refrigerator, clothes dryer, pool heater, generator, and more?

3. Improved performance

Propane contains more energy per cubic metre than natural gas. For home heating, this provides a more consistent and even distribution of air temperature supply.

4. Longer life span of equipment

Propane gas furnaces and heaters last longer - up to 20 years on average - compared to 14 years for electric heating pumps. A longer life cycle for equipment means less waste in landfills.

5. A smaller footprint

Propane equipment often requires less physical space than traditional energy sources, taking up a smaller amount of room in your home.

6. Local propane equipment and services

A wide range of high-quality home heating propane products are available in select locations - from furnaces and boilers to water heaters, fireplaces and other equipment.

7. Easy installation and delivery

We’ll come to your home and provide everything you need, including:

  • Installation
  • Regular maintenance/service
  • Free in-home energy assessments
  • Automatic delivery
  • Conversions from other energy sources to propane
  • Equipment financing

Frequently Asked Questions

What is propane?

Propane is a versatile, multi-purpose fuel that is highly portable, clean burning, safe and non-toxic. It is a gas at standard temperature and pressure but can be compressed to a transportable liquid.

As an alternative fuel source to oil and electric energy, propane can power your home’s heat pump, furnace/boiler, water heater, space heaters, fireplace, gas range, refrigerator, clothes dryer, pool heater, generator, and more.

Is it better to own or lease a propane tank?

Owning a propane tank requires extra steps beyond the purchase itself. There are legal requirements such as registration, obtaining liability insurance (the Canadian industry standard is $5 million liability) and getting a regulated inspection to comply with provincial regulatory boards.

We only lease propane tanks to customers. That way, our customers enjoy a hassle-free service. We take care of the legal requirements - so you can enjoy an easy installation experience and convenient propane fuel deliveries.

Each Ultramar cylinder and tank are delivered and installed by qualified, licensed  technicians who comply with all safety requirements and our own Quality Assurance programs.

Additionally, Ultramar will complete a documented inspection of every propane tank every year.

Can you convert a natural gas furnace to run on propane?

Yes. While most gas furnaces are configured for natural gas, they can be easily converted to propane.

Can I use both propane heating and an electric heat pump?

Yes. These "dual-fuel" or "hybrid" systems use propane for heating and an electric heat pump for cooling.

Together, they can improve energy efficiency and comfort, especially in mixed climates.

A hybrid heating system can switch to propane heat, which provides better comfort and more efficient heating in colder climates.

If I use propane as my primary household energy source, what size storage tank do I need?

Generally, a 500-gallon (1,892-litre) tank can hold enough propane to meet the annual energy needs of an average four-bedroom home.

Tanks of 1,000 gallons (3,785 litres) or more may be needed for larger homes with swimming pools and hot tubs.

A permit is required. Permits are included with the Ultramar installation service package.

Why did my tank percentage fall so quickly?

If the tank percentage fell quickly after a delivery, especially if the weather has been cold, this is normal.

Although your tank gauge may read 80% right after a fill, inspecting the gauge the following morning may show a percentage drop of up to 5%, even if no gas has been used.

This occurs because your propane gas is delivered as a liquid. Like all liquids, it expands as temperatures rise and contracts when temperatures fall. (Actually, the liquid propane in a tank will expand 270 times its volume once it vaporizes into a gas.).

You will still have the same number of litres of propane, but it will occupy less (or more) volume depending on changes in temperature.

For this reason - whether the tank is filled partially or fully - the delivery driver relies on the bleeder valve (and not the gauge) to measure how much propane fuel is being added.

Important reminder: The gauge reading on your tank only measures the level of liquid remaining in the tank. It will vaporize into gas, which is what your equipment and appliances burn in order to operate.

When do I need to place a delivery?

It is time to re-order propane when your gauge reaches between 20 - 30%.
